What is an MRI ?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive medical imaging method that employs powerful magnetic fields and radio waves to generate intricate visuals of the internal structures within the human body. This painless procedure plays a vital role in the diagnosis and ongoing assessment of a wide range of medical ailments, encompassing cancer, cardiovascular issues, neurological disorders, and musculoskeletal injuries. Moreover, MRI can serve as a valuable tool for directing surgical interventions and tracking the progress of medical treatments.

What is a 1.5T MRI ?

Medical professionals often use terms like "1.5T" or "3.0T" when discussing magnetic resonance (MR) scanners, as these designations correspond to the scanner's magnetic field strength. In the realm of MR imaging, "T" signifies tesla, a unit of measurement employed to describe magnetic flux density. One tesla is the standard unit for this purpose, conforming to the International System of Units, which employs the metric system. Essentially, one tesla equates to one weber (the representation of magnetic flux) per square meter or 10,000 gauss.

 

Higher tesla scanners possess more potent magnets, both in a general sense and within the scanner's bore. The magnet and its associated magnetic field constitute arguably the most crucial component of an MRI scanner. Throughout the MR industry, most scanners either operate at 1.5T or 3.0T, although there are variations with strengths falling below 1.5T and, more recently, going up to 7.0T.
